We just got back from a trip to Lisbon and the Azores Islands and as well as staying in a house perched on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean, swimming with pods of wild dolphins and bathing in natural thermal mineral pools amidst lush rainforest, I was also incredibly stoked to discover that São Miguel (the main island) is COVERED in incredible street art!!!
Most of you know that I LOVE clever and beautiful street art (read my post on street art in London here), so this was a lovely little surprise birthday present from the universe!
Every day I felt like a little kid on an Easter egg hunt, exploring random alleyways searching for treasures… :)
There were even a handful of pieces by my favourite street artist “Vhils” who chisels incredible portraits of local people into the walls of old and ruined buildings.
While trying to find a few of his pieces, we asked a local where we could find them in his little fishing village. He directed us to the dock area and said that he didn’t know who did them but thought they were incredible and looked exactly like the actual fishermen.
Here’s three of his pieces that were scattered around the island. The third is of a mother holding an unseen baby on a ruined watch tower. We had been searching for this one for days and finally found it on our way back to the airport! (I have the most patient partner in the world…) :)
Making friends with the wildlife…
The piece bellow wrapped around the building so here’s three angles so that you can kinda piece it together in your head…
A year or so ago all the tiles on this street in the middle of town were painted with different colours. Magical!
There were so many more, but I don’t want to overload this page!
And of course share this post with your friends if you think they’d like this too!
